MIXTAPE: Burning Down The House

The purpose of this mixtape is to embody the Heavy Accents' interpretation of house music. I've unfortunately taken out the usual disco flare this time around, but packed the mix in deep / tech / indie house, with some UK garage vibes, and rounded it out with an indie electro number from Digitalism's DJ-Kicks Exclusives EP that came out over the summer.

If the title sounds familiar, Burning Down The House is taken from the name of a Talking Heads song, which is not even remotely relevant to house music. But nonetheless, house music is the subject of the day, and here is my personalized serving for those willing to listen. And just a little secret, that house icon on the cover was hijacked from a Webding :-).

MIXTAPE: S.P.F (Super Pacific Frequencies)

S.P.F. is my latest mixtape bringing it back to basics on the disco tip + classic house vibes. It is in part inspired by the persistently awesome weather in California, as well as by everyone's need for a little SPF when summer rolls around. Though in my world, SPF means "Super Pacific Frequencies" :-).

The mix opens with a tropical toe-tapper from Count Jackula (aka Moullinex) and leads into sunblockers like a b-side from Todd Terje's superb It's The Arps EP, a Bottin edit of Lio's "Sage Comme Une Image", a cut from Session Victim's excellent debut full-length The Haunted House Of House, my current Kraak & Smaak song obsession, and Turbotito's fantastic twist on a new Bonde de Role single.

Protect yourself this summer, grab some S.P.F. below!

MIXTAPE: Dilations (Part Two)

Talk about a time dilation since Part One of my Dilations mixtape. I present to you with Part Two. This second half is more homogenous genre-wise (house / electro / techno). Opening (the intro might sound familiar...) and closing things up is Canblaster. I'm a big fan.

Now for the true origin behind the title "Dilations"; I've always been a big sci-fi fan (yes, moment of truth). Lots of times when you have a story (take the original Planet Of The Apes film, for example) about persons traveling through space, there's always the acceleration and time dilation factor of getting from Point A to Point B, since space is super vast and travel takes forever. In a matter of a few Earth years, Charlton Heston's crew travelled 1,000s of years through space since they had the means to move at lightspeed. They barely aged but (spoiler alert) ended up waaaay in the future. You can Google the rest on time dilation; for now check out this Dilations' Point B.

Check out Part One below; although it might open in a disco direction, the mixtape is really conveying dance music in general. Electro, house and future bass all have a place here. See you soon for Part Two...

MIXTAPE: Moustache

With a pile of tracks sitting around my hard drive and a free night to piece things together on the fly, I finally decided it was time for a heavy 2011 kick-off (after the three months of mixtape silence) with this retro-future blast of indie disco/italo/house.

This mix could fall under the Disco Desire series, but with the indie & house elements I wanted it to stand on its own. By the way, if you haven't heard the A-Trak's Robyn remix, wait 'til your ears get blown away.

Made in the night, Moustache was made for your night. The title of the mixtape memorializes the shaving of my mustache and, additionally, I visualize it as a soundtrack for a mustache'd dude (or chick, I'm not gender-biased), time-traveling between the last three decades to all the hippest, legendary underground clubs. Cheers!

MIXTAPE: Woo! Yeah!

This mixtape is named after the "Woo! Yeah!" James Brown sample, made infamous on Rob Base & DJ E-Z Rock's hip-hop classic "It Takes Two" from the '90s (and sampled in countless other songs). Although this mixtape doesn't contain a single instance of the sample, the Tensnake remix of Azari & III featured actually samples "It Takes Two" (although the remix also lacks the presence of the actual "Woo! Yeah!" clip, in continuation with my theme of contradictions).

Anyways, my Woo! Yeah! mixtape includes some funk (Change, High Fashion) sprinkled throughout for good measure to accent the rest of the set: everything obscure post-disco (Connie Case) to nu disco warriors (Midnight Magic, Aeroplane, Voltage, The C90s, The Swiss), indie rock (Tortoiseshell) to indie house (Miami Horror, Fabian, Moullinex) and on. A little bit of everything for the (adventurous music) lover in you...

Tracklist
1. Chɐngǝ - Got To Gǝt Up
2. Midnight Magic - Beam Me Up
3. Shine 2009 - New Rules
4. Azari & III - Reckless For Your Love (Tensnake Remix)

MIXTAPE: Foreign Tongues

I've been itching to showcase some more tropical/afro-house jams, so I present you with Foreign Tongues, a mixtape I put together based on a more stripped-down, rhythmic house sound layered with kuduro, afro-caribbean & breakbeat influences (aside from the disco-flavored opener). Keep an eye out for those guys and in the meantime, help yourself to the ceremonial sounds of Foreign Tongues.

MIXTAPE: Crystal Lite

I've been slammed with DMCA complaints for this post on multiple occasions. I'm not deleting this mixtape from my personal archives just because the Nazis at EMI can't handle me including not even the entire version of a song as part of a mix. I'm leaving this post up minus download links. Above is also revised artwork for those interested. For the actual mixtape, you'll have to look elsewhere:

"In the vein of a previous mixtape, Last Night Heavy Accents Saved My Life, Crystal Lite was put together as a mixtape for chill-out • post-party • day-or-night car rides, clocking tempos under 120 bpm. Taking a rest from the exhausting 130 bpm electro/house music out there, I wanted to highlight a well-rounded set of indie, chill/dream wave, and hip-hop influenced indie/electronic tracks.

Besides indie favorites Air, Clinic/DFA, The xx and Ratatat, I threw some fave tunes/artists keeping music interesting these days: Washed Out, Mux Mool, Toro Y Moi, Dam-Funk and Pski (aka Pilooski).

Download Crystal Lite below, just in time for vibing out to this Spring/Summer. Enjoy!"

Tracklist
1. El Guincho - Palmitos Park
2. Washed Out - Feel It All Around
3. Air - Sing Sang Sung (Black Moth Super Rainbow Remix)
4. Gorillaz - Stylo
5. Clinic - Tomorrow (DFA Remix)
6. Mux Mool - Night Court
7. Siriusmo - Wow

MIXTAPE: Arizona

I wanted to let this mixtape speak for itself. Not necessarily an homage (and neither does the music reflect anything related) to the state, Arizona is mostly about good indie/electronic/dance beats catching my ear at the moment.

I do have a point behind the title that I don't want to push too hard, so I'll keep that a mystery for now. In the meantime, check out Flight Facilities (a new act from Australia - thanks Jon), a cut from the new Holy Ghost! EP, Nacho Lovers (their new single is summertime epicness!), Tracey Thorn (ex-Everything But The Girl) and VEGA (aka Neon Indian) all blended together for you on Arizona:

FEATURED: fakeRich's 10 Days of Mixmas (Day One)

I've been featured on fakeRICH.com's special edition Holiday/Christmas mixtape series aptly titled 10 Days of Mixmas (yes there's 10 days until Christmas as of this post!) as the First Day. I said Scream With Your Feet would be the last for '09, but sometimes there's exceptions to the rules.

I was part of a handful of DJ friends & family of the fakeRICH community asked to participate and was totally down for it. The mix is short and sweet and I threw in tracks of producers I really got into over the last 12 months (Siriusmo, Pilooski, Radioclit, Renaissance Man, etc.). Tracklist and download link (hosted at fakeRICH) below. Happy Holidays from Heavy Accents x fakeRICH!

MIXTAPE: Scream With Your Feet

Scream With Your Feet brings my mixtapes back to the '00s since the last few retro ones I've been putting out and also marks the last mix I'm going to be putting out for the remainder of the year. The sound represented in SWYF also marks the intersection of my musical influences past (see Rhythm Life, Disco Desire Vol. 1 & 2) and present.

A few highlights include: Neon Indian, Moulinex's Two Door Cinema Club (discover this band if you haven't yet!) remix, Lindstrøm & Christabelle's latest collaboration remixed by Aeroplane, Friendly Fires' house-friendly remix of Phoenix, Chromeo's new retro-future single and Rubix's ridiculously fun disco filler-house track "Baiser Sur La Disco".

Until 2010, enjoy this with your Holidays and let your feet scream a little.

MIXTAPE: Rhythm Life

Following suit with the more retro mixes I've been putting out, here's one I was excited to craft: Rhythm Life, a collection of acid house, electro (hip-hop) and classic rave.

From the time I discovered electronica & dance music 10+ years ago, it was only natural for me to retrace my steps and dig up songs from the pioneers & legends: Juan Atkins (featured on Rhythm Life twice as Cybotron & Model 500), Afrika Bambaataa, Orbital, etc.

I started listening to hip-hop when I was young, so 80s/old school hip-hop easily attracted my ears. I was always especially drawn to electro music (the real/original incarnation): Egyptian Lover, Mantronix, Jonzun Crew, every Juan Atkins moniker. "Clear" by Cybotron has to be one of the greatest classic electro tracks ever made.

This mix of tracks might not be the most accessible, but 99% of the songs on there mean a lot to the history of house/electro/techno and to myself as a music fan. It also doubles as my Haçienda (Factory Records, Manchester, etc.) mix.

TRACKLIST:

1. Mɐn Pɐrrısh - Hıp Hop Be Bop (Orıgınɐl Versıon)
2. Adonis - No Way Back
3. 808 State - Cubik (Kings County Perspective)
4. Newcleus - Jam On It
5. A Guy Called Gerald - Voodoo Ray (Original Mix)
6. New Order - Confusion
7. Hashim - Al-Naayfysh (The Soul)

The second installment of Disco Desire is here, embodied in a mélange of vintage & nu disco, house, funk, and old-school electro. If Vol. 1 was the ying, Vol. 2 is the yang.

A couple of tracks have been stuck in my head for days now, including the spacey Al Usher jam, the groovy Sammy Bardot edit, and Canyon's shoulder-shaking "Apples & Pears" track. Hopefully they will become cosmically etched into your minds as well... See you on the dancefloor.

MIXTAPE: DYFAO!

DYFAO!, or Dance Your Fucking Ass Off!, was inspired by the Party Rock aesthetic of LMFAO, triple distilled through the Heavy Accents sound. Confused yet? You shouldn't be. I've put together my latest favorite tracks, a handful I spin and the rest I hope will make you spin and DYFAO!

This was a fun one to compile, and it comes loaded with lots of easter eggs. Aside from a remix and original from Holy Ghost! and DatA each, there's an excellent Daft Punk cover by The Twelves, an In Flagranti edit of a certain Clash song, Sam Sparro vocals on Beni's track, and a Calvin Harris touch behind Dizzee Rascal's "Holiday". Enjoy and namaste.

TRACKLIST:
1. Mıss Kıttın & The Hackǝr - Party In My Hǝad (Thıǝvǝs Lıkǝ Us Rǝmıx)
2. Phoenix - Lisztomania (Holy Ghost! Loves Paris Remixomania)
3. Canyons - Blue Snakes
4. Beni - Maximus
5. Dizzee Rascal - Holiday

9. Retro/Grade - Moda
10. The Twelves - Night Vision (Daft Punk Cover)
11. YACHT - Summer Song
12. Animal Collective - My Girls (Hatchmatik Disco Bootleg)

MIXTAPE: Disco Desire (Vol. 1)

I decided to record a mix separate from the usual fare of music, with an emphasis this time on retro/italo/nu -disco. It's meant to be played for your post-clubbing needs, or as an excuse to stay in on a hot Summer night.

You'll notice it's entitled "Vol. 1", as I plan to continue a series of Disco Desire mixtapes covering personal gems from my disco-related library (i.e. not exclusive to the pop songs from the 70's).
